Dickens had some inside knowledge and there was a familiar face amongst the opposition in Tex Whitelocke formerly of RCC Strikers, but everything else was going to be a learning exercise.

It was clear early on where the main threat from CBF lay but between Griffiths, Heffernan and Naj, Whitelocke was getting little joy and unlike Burger King CBF lacked the abundance of quality to help him out. However nobody was getting complacent and a well worked move enabled Dickens to open the scoring for Harry’s after about ten minutes. Rob Neesome was given a first opportunity to shine for Harry’s, and he stepped up to the mark well, assisting in the battling as well as trying to make progress at the other end.

Still Whitelocke tried to recover his side’s position but a robbery from his feet started an excellent break. The ball was moved swiftly to Dickens who spotted the run of his best mate Stammo and the Jamaican was able to poke the ball past the CBF keeper with his first touch.

Doherty and Atterbury both entered the fray and took off where others left off, curtailing any opposition breaks and the battling qualities of the previous season were in evidence once again. At half time Harry’s deservedly led by two goals to nil.

Harry’s started the second half strongly but were getting denied by the CBF keeper well. And it almost looked another case of failing to convert chances would become costly when CBF swept through Harry’s rearguard and struck past Carlowe. Agonisingly less than two minutes later it was all square. This time CBF broke down the right hand side and fired the ball into the back of the net. It was harsh on Harry’s, but the sky blues hadn’t helped their cause by punishing the opposition further even though at one point they were reduced to just three outfield players.

Fortunately things weren’t level for long as Atkinson restored the leaf for Harry’s. The management quickly decided to call a time out for a breather and reorganization. This took the desired effect as Atkinson recorded his hat trick immediately after the restart with a thundering shot that bounced in off the upright. And just to confirm matters he added his fourth and a fifth for Harry’s close to the end.

So despite a number of notable absences early season and a hammering from Burger King, Harry’s have still six points to their name out of a possible nine, and have matched their total tally of wins from season 1 when they were last in the top flight. Optimism was definitely up on the previous week and now can Harry’s push on in search of a top two finish?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://matchreport13jul09.blogspot.com/2009/08/harrys-fc-match-report-v-cbf-crusaders.html' title='Harrys FC : Match Report v.
